This five-week program is designed for organizational leaders who are looking to improve their skills and knowledge by working intensively with a small group of peers under the expert direction of two of the most progressive business leaders in the country. Ari Weinzweig is the Founding Partner and CEO of Zingerman's. Maggie Bayless is the Founder of ZingTrain.

The course will run every Tuesday in November, and is built upon the essays from the Zingerman’s Guide to Good Leading, Part 1: Building a Great Business. However, the exact focus of the sessions will be adapted to address specific challenges of the participants, which is why we're keeping the class size small.

What's the format?

The course consists of 5 lessons, each with extensive pre-reading and preparation (expect to spend 3-4 hours/week in addition to classroom time), ongoing dialogue and conversation, and five 2.5-hour virtual classroom sessions with Ari Weinzweig and Maggie Bayless.  

Classroom sessions run from 12:00PM - 2:30PM Eastern (ET) on November 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th.

Session 1 – The 12 Natural Laws of Building a Great Business (November 2, 2021)
These natural laws are the organizational equivalent of “due north” on a compass. Ignoring them won’t necessarily cause an immediate crisis, but over time it can lead to big trouble.  Our experience at Zingerman’s, which includes working with hundreds of other organizations through ZingTrain, is that these laws are applicable to any business or non-profit—regardless of size, scale, age, service or product.  They work well for solo operators and big corporations, publicly traded companies and privately held firms, mainstream businesses and mavericks.  Identify the laws that you are consciously focused on and those that may not be getting the organizational attention that they deserve.

Session 2 – Mission Statements and Visions  (November 9, 2021)
The way we look at things, mission statements and organizational visions are not the same—although both are important.  A mission statement is like the north star - providing direction and keeping us on track, although we can never actually reach it.  A vision, on the other hand, is what success looks like at a particular point in time in the future—whether the vision is for a new product, a project, a personal vacation or the organization as a whole—and if we are successful we WILL get there!  Practice the recipe for writing a vision of greatness and create a draft of the future you desire.

Session 3 – Organizational Culture (November 16, 2021)
We view culture as the everyday reality of organizational life.  Culture is not the mission statement, the vision, your bank balance or the staff handbook (though of course all those contribute to culture in various ways).  Organizational culture is what we really do and say; the way we really behave; the way we treat each other, our products, our customers, our community and ourselves.  In essence, culture is the “personality” of the company.  Just as each of us has individual strengths and weaknesses in our personalities, so too does our organization.  Take a more mindful approach to consciously creating the organizational culture that you really want.

Session 4 – Effective Organizational Change  (November 23, 2021)
While we often find ourselves wishing that “things would just settle down,”  the truth is that change is constant.  Some change is imposed on us (Covid-19, a new competitor) and some change we initiate (new product offerings, process improvements).  In either case, the better we become at managing change, the more effective we’ll be as leaders and the more successful our organizations will be. Use Zingerman’s organizational change process, Bottom-Line Change®, to increase organizational engagement and buy-in for the changes that you want and/or need to make. 

Session 5 – Sustainable Business and the Organizational Ecosystem  (November 30, 2021)
Sustainable business, like sustainable agriculture, does not deplete key resources but rather leaves the world as good as—or better than—it was before the business started.  To state the nearly obvious, staying in business does suppose that we will be profitable, but that alone isn’t really what it means to be sustainable.  The point is not to “win big and cash out” but rather to keep playing and, in the process, to create wins for all the players at once, while the pool gets ever-bigger and ever-more rewarding for all involved.  Finish this course by prioritizing the next steps that you will take to build a stronger and more sustainable organization.

The technical details:

All course reading materials will be offered through Teachable.  Weekly classroom sessions will be conducted via Zoom Meeting.  Between-session discussions will take place on a private Slack channel.  Details on how to access all of these resources will be provided upon registration.
